Advisory Committees and Task Forces

The Supreme Court of Ohio relies upon numerous bodies to help meet its constitutional and statutory authority to exercise general superintendence over all courts in the state and provide oversight to the practice of law. Advisory committees provide advice and assistance to the Court and Court staff on topics of general public interest or emerging issues significant to the law, the legal profession, and the judicial process. Task forces are formed to review specific issues or topics involving the law, courts, the legal profession, or the administration of justice. A task force, unlike other bodies utilized by the Court, cease to exist upon issuing its report and recommendations.

Advisory committees and task forces are created by the Chief Justice with notice to the Court and operate at the discretion of the Chief Justice. Members of advisory committees and task forces are appointed by or with approval of the Chief Justice. they are comprised of judges, attorneys, clerks of court, other court personnel, and private citizens from throughout Ohio.

The Court has adopted Guidelines for the Creation and Operation of Supreme Court Boards, Commissions, Advisory Committees, and Task Forces. The guidelines specify what constitutes a board, commission, advisory committee, or task force, how they are created, and how members are appointed to these bodies.

Pursuant to the authority of these guidelines, the Court has issued Guidelines for Supreme Court Advisory Committees and Guidelines for Supreme Court Task Forces which serve as a template for the operational guidelines of those bodies.

The members of the advisory committees and task forces fulfill specifically designated duties and responsibilities. To help guide the activities of the membership, the Court has also adopted a Code of Ethics for Court Appointees and Guidelines for Travel by Court Appointees.
