Interpreter Services Program Forms Translation Project

The Supreme Court of Ohio embarked on a translation project to benefit individuals who have Limited English Proficiency (LEP) by making 27 court forms available in five major languages: Arabic, Chinese, Russian, Somali and Spanish. 

These forms were selected by the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Interpreter Services in collaboration with the Ohio Judicial Conference to assist courts in Ohio to enhance communication with linguistic minorities. The Supreme Court selected, through a competitive bid process, professional language translators qualified to provide clear and accurate translations. Their qualifications are available for review upon request. While the translations are accurate, they are not official forms approved by the Supreme Court. Users must still complete and file the English version of these translated forms.

Each English version of the form is posted below along with the translated versions in the five languages. The forms are recommended to be used by the parties to enhance their understanding of legal information and also to advance the work of court interpreters by allowing them to provide the same precise information to everyone. These forms are not meant to substitute the advice of counsel or the role of the interpreters. Parties may want to seek further advice from attorneys.

The project was spearheaded by the Translation Subcommittee of the Supreme Court Advisory Committee on Interpreter Services and was coordinated by the Interpreter Services Program. The translation process involved the selection of five professional translators to translate the forms and five editors to review the work of the translators.  The two-tier process was designed to ensure the highest quality and accuracy in the translation of the forms.

The project was funded by a generous grant from the Ohio State Bar Foundation.
