Ohio Judiciary Loses Two Judges This Week

Judge Barbara L. MarleyJudge Peter M. SikoraThe Ohio judiciary is in mourning this week after the deaths of two judges in just three days.

Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court Judge Peter M. Sikora, 60, died Wednesday in Middleburg Heights while Fostoria Municipal Court Judge Barbara L. Marley, 64, died Saturday in Fostoria.

Judge Sikora served on the juvenile court bench for more than 20 years. Judge Marley won election in November to the municipal bench, beginning her term on January 1.

Judge Sikora ran for the Ohio Supreme Court three times in 1996, 2006 and 2008. He served as president of the Ohio Association of Juvenile Court Judges from 2008 to 2009. Previously, he was Gov. Richard Celeste’s deputy legal counsel and deputy director and general counsel at the state Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.

In addition to holding the distinction of being the first woman judge of the municipal court, Marley was the first woman mayor and the first woman city council president in the history of the city of Fostoria. She also was a partner in her family’s law firm for 39 years. She followed her father’s footsteps in the law. He founded Marley & Marley in 1934.

Each judge was heavily involved in their communities serving on numerous civic boards.

Chambers Funeral Home in Cleveland is handling the funeral arrangements for Judge Sikora. Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home, 4420 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland. Judge Marley’s funeral was yesterday. Memorials are suggested to St. Wendelin Church & School, 323 N. Wood St., Fostoria, OH 44830, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
