Pro Bono: Justice in Action

The Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor encourages Ohio’s attorneys to report their 2011 pro bono activities in a video statement posted today on the court’s website.

In January, more than 38,000 attorneys received an email seeking their pro bono activities in order to gather meaningful information about the extent and nature of pro bono work in Ohio as well as encourage pro bono activity to aid those in need of free legal services. Attorneys are also encouraged to include any financial contributions to a legal services organization in 2011.

The Supreme Court partners with the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation on the project to identify gaps in the delivery of legal services in order to strengthen the network of services available to Ohioans in need.

“Just by taking a few minutes to report your activity, you can help us ensure that more people who need legal help will get it,” Chief Justice O’Connor said.

Ohio lawyers who voluntarily report their pro bono activities and financial support for legal aid programs will remain anonymous. To participate, attorneys should access the reporting Web site contained in the email and answer eight questions that should take about five minutes to complete.

On an annual basis, the foundation compiles and reports the information collected to the court, bar associations and legal services organizations throughout Ohio.
