(Jan. 29, 2009) The Supreme Court of Ohio has indefinitely suspended the law license of Elyria attorney J. Terry Robinson for abandoning the cases of four different clients he had agreed to represent in bankruptcy actions.
The Court adopted findings by the Board of Commissioners on Grievances & Discipline that, after accepting fee advances of from $1,200 to more than $1,800, Robinson engaged in long delays in filing the clients’ petitions with the bankruptcy court, made incomplete and inaccurate filings, failed on several occasions to appear for scheduled court proceedings and made multiple false and misleading statements to his clients regarding actions he had taken and the status of their cases. Robinson’s neglect and errors resulted in significant harm to his clients.
Among multiple counts of professional misconduct, the Court found that Robinson had violated state attorney discipline rules that prohibit neglect of an entrusted legal matter, intentionally causing damage or prejudice to a client, knowingly making false statements of law or fact, and conduct involving fraud, deceit, dishonesty or misrepresentation.
Today’s action bars Robinson, who has been registered with the Court as inactive since November 2007, from applying for reinstatement of his license until at least January 2011.
