Justice Lanzinger Speaks at OWBF Event
Guiding attorneys at a continuing legal education (CLE) seminar, Supreme Court Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger discussed successful speaking techniques at the Ohio Women’s Bar Foundation Leadership Institute on Nov. 17.
Because attorneys speak publicly to many audiences throughout their career, including judges, other attorneys, clients, members of the media, and the community, Justice Lanzinger spoke about “10 Principles for Successful Public Speaking.”
Justice Lanzinger focused her remarks on important techniques to make speeches more effective. Before they came to the CLE, participating attorneys prepared a four minute speech, which Justice Lanzinger and John Ludlum, a communications professor at Otterbein University, critiqued, providing advice to participants on improving their public speaking skills.
“As a former teacher, I enjoyed the subject matter of this presentation particularly,”said Justice Lanzinger. “Attorneys must be good speakers to succeed in legal practice—words are our greatest tool, after all. The Leadership participants had an opportunity to try out new ideas with these short presentations. I hope that Professor Ludlum and I gave them good feedback, so the next real speech will be easier than ever to prepare. ”
Now serving her second six-year term on the Supreme Court, Justice Lanzinger is the only person ever elected to every level of Ohio’s judiciary. The 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, she previously served on the Sixth District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. Her varied judicial experience allows her a unique perspective of the state court system.
