Justice Lanzinger Delivers Keynote on Professionalism to Incoming Law Students
At an orientation session this morning for the incoming class of 2011 at the University of Toledo College of Law, Supreme Court of Ohio Justice Judith Ann Lanzinger urged students to consider the meaning of professionalism and then begin practicing it in their everyday lives.
Justice Lanzinger, who earned her law degree at UT, served as the keynote speaker and kicked off a full day’s events associated with student orientation.
“The profession of law is a learned art, practiced for public service and as a means of livelihood,” she said. “This means that good lawyers are more than good business people. They are expected to be excellent servants of the rule of law by respecting the courts, respecting the entire legal process, and respecting one another.”
She said she vividly remembers her first days at the College of Law. “My classmates and I were idealistic about learning about our chosen profession. I hope these new students will rise to the challenges expected of them, and they, in turn will have great success.”
Now serving her second six-year term on the Supreme Court, Justice Lanzinger is the only person ever elected to every level of Ohio’s judiciary. The 150th Justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio, she previously served on the Sixth District Court of Appeals for Ohio, the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas and the Toledo Municipal Court. Her varied judicial experience allows her a unique perspective of the state court system.
