Justice O’Donnell Presents Lecture at Legal Eagles Seminar

Ohio Supreme Court Justice Terrence O’Donnell joined fellow St. Edward High School alumni on December 7 when he spoke at the Legal Eagles Year-End Update. The annual Legal Eagles continuing legal education program is named for the presenters who are St. Edward’s alumni who have gone on to have successful careers in law and on the bench.

Sponsored by the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association and the St. Edward High School Legal Eagles, Justice O’Donnell joined several fellow alums during the year-end update including Judges Brendan J. Sheehan, John Russo, Thomas J. Vozar, and John McCafferty.

Justice O’Donnell spoke about professionalism and discussed the development of the Professionalism Commission created by the late Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer. Justice O’Donnell said the public has gained great respect for the court and the profession because of adherence to the rule of law. He challenged those in attendance to become role models for others.

“It’s always great to visit my alma mater and connect with members of the bench and bar,” Justice O’Donnell said. “It’s also an opportunity to remind the lawyers about the benefits of the Supreme Court’s Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program.”

Since joining the Supreme Court, Justice O’Donnell has led statewide efforts to increase professionalism among lawyers and judges across Ohio. His leadership culminated in the implementation of a Lawyer to Lawyer Mentoring Program that is recognized nationally as one of the finest in the United States. He regularly speaks on topics of ethics, professionalism, and appellate advocacy, and also supports the expansion and strengthening of lawyer mentoring in Ohio.

Justice O’Donnell has been a member of the state judiciary for more than 30 years and has served on both the trial court and appellate court before being elected to the Ohio Supreme Court. He began his service on the Ohio Supreme Court in 2003 and was elected in 2004, 2006, and most recently in 2012 with almost 70 percent of the vote statewide.
