Training Opportunities

The Office of Court Security is committed to providing ongoing training opportunities to the personnel charged with the safety and security of Ohio's courts. The following training opportunities are currently available to those who currently work in this capacity. All training opportunities are offered at no cost to the participants.

Supreme Court Sponsored Training

Basic Courthouse Checkpoint Screening Course (4 Hours)

The Basic Courthouse Checkpoint Screening Course is intended for those court security personnel whose primary responsibility is checkpoint screening operations. The content of the course is specifically tailored to those personnel with little or no experience in screening operations. Topics discussed include checkpoint set up considerations, proper operation of screening equipment, best practices for efficient and effective operations, checkpoint safety, maintenance of equipment and practical exercises. PowerPoint presentation and handouts will be provided. This course can be conducted at your location or at the Moyer Judicial Center.

X-ray Operators Training Course (2 Hours)

This class is intended for students who have had experience in the operation of screening equipment and checkpoint operations. Participants will learn how to identify various threat items such as cutting instruments, knives, scissors, etc.; firearms and explosives. The training is accomplished through a combination of classroom discussion and practical exercises. Handouts are included. This course is an excellent follow-up to the Basic Courthouse Checkpoint Screening Course and can be conducted at your location or at the Moyer Judicial Center.

X-Ray Image Recognition and Interpretation PC-Based (2 Hours)

The X-ray Image Recognition and Interpretation course aims to teach participants how to interpret an X-ray image so that they may successfully identify any prohibited items. This class is intended for all personnel who operate X-ray equipment on a daily basis and will exercise their ability to better identify prohibited items by image repetition. The computer based training program provides participants with a basic overview of X-ray unit operation at no cost to your court. The participants log onto the program and must work their way through several training modules. Topics include X-ray safety, images and threat item recognition. At the conclusion of the training participants must successfully pass an X-ray image recognition test. This course, along with the test, will take approximately two hours. The training computer system can be delivered and set up at your court. Equipment will be picked up by a member of the Supreme Court Office of Court Security once your personnel have completed training. Depending on the amount of staff using equipment, one to two weeks shall be a reasonable timeframe.

TASER M-26, X-26, C2 User Training, Certification (6-8 Hours) (Recertification 2 Hours)

The TASER user course will provide courts the ability to have their security personnel trained and certified in the use of the TASER non-lethal device. Users can be certified in the M-26, X-26, or C2 TASER model. The course consists of approximately six to eight hours of classroom training, a written test, and practical exercises and qualification. Upon completion students will receive a manufacturer's certification, which is valid for one year. This course also meets the requirements for re-certification. Students will NOT receive a TASER device from The Office of Court Security at the completion of the course. This course can be held at your court or at the Moyer Judicial Center. There is no charge for this training class. The Office of Court Security will provide handouts. Courts requesting training must provide training cartridges for the TASER device.

Requirements

  • Must have existing TASER program and policy in place or be in the process of implementation prior to training
  • Must be able to provide classroom space, safe area for TASER discharge, and TASER devices for course to be held at your location
